World ballet comes to GREEN SPRINGS: towards a town of culture

Alongside sport, the other thing the company is putting its effort into is art and culture. The stage is TACHIKAWA STAGE GARDEN in GREEN SPRINGS.

According to an announcement in May 2026, Tachihi Holdings brought “Youth Grand Prix 2027 Japan”, one of the world’s largest competitions for young ballet dancers, to Tachikawa for the second year running. YAGP is an international ballet competition founded in 1999, and every year more than 10,000 young dancers from around the world are said to take part. In each country’s qualifying rounds, principals of the world’s leading ballet schools and directors of ballet companies judge, and the entrants aim for the world finals held in the United States. The dates announced for the Japan qualifier were 29 September to 7 October 2026, at STAGE GARDEN in Tachikawa. In a comment for the announcement, the founder said the Tachihi group’s slogan, “Making Tachikawa a town of culture and the arts”, and the competition’s mission of nurturing young dancers had come together.

Now compare the name and the dates. The 2027 competition is being held in Tachikawa in autumn 2026. The name is presumably matched to the year of the world finals, but on the calendar it looks as if Tachikawa is living a year ahead in the future.

To coincide with the competition, a free “TACHIKAWA TACHIHI Ballet Festival” was announced for the GREEN SPRINGS plaza on 3 and 4 October: special performances by entrants, a show using the fountain as a stage, and workshops. In summer, a free music event, “TACHI FES”, is held in the hall and the plaza; 2026 was its sixth year.

The ties between the company and the city are deepening on paper too. In October 2024, Tachihi Holdings signed a comprehensive partnership agreement with the city of Tachikawa. According to the company’s announcement, it was the first time the city had signed such an agreement with a business headquartered in Tachikawa. The partnership covers eleven fields, from safety and security in daily life to sport, culture, tourism promotion and child-rearing support. In 2025 the company also signed an agreement with Chuo University. And the company’s history has a line saying that in September 2026 it made a “Joint Declaration on Town-Making through Music and Culture”.

Disaster preparedness is also part of the next decade. In September 2025, Tachihi Holdings and its group companies signed an agreement with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Tachikawa Police Station. If the station building becomes unusable in a major disaster, STAGE GARDEN, the arena and the dome can be used, under police control, as a substitute station or standby area. In an emergency, the ballet stage becomes a police base. A very Tachikawa kind of double face, I think.

Tachihi and GREEN SPRINGS’ next decade in numbers

  • About 980,000 — the Tachihi group’s landholdings (square metres), about 1/25 of Tachikawa’s area. Cut a map of Tachikawa into 25 pieces and one of them would be, more or less, this company’s.
  • 211 — guest rooms at THE NEXTT HOTEL. Some of them are rooms where you stay with your dog.
  • 1,500 — maximum capacity of the same hotel’s grand banquet hall. Roughly 1/125 of Tachikawa’s population fits into one room.
  • 142.73 — cubic metres of Tama timber used in COMMONS TACHIKAWA TACHIHI. Trees from the mountains turned into shops three minutes from a station.
  • 365 — bottles of Tachihi beer for the player of the match if Tachikawa Dice win their home opener.
  • 60 — games in Tachikawa Dice’s new season. Even drinking one bottle per game, it would take six seasons to finish all 365.

Traveller’s detour quiz

THE NEXTT HOTEL opens in Faret Tachikawa in March 2027. Which of these is on the announced list of room types?

  • A A dog room, where you can stay with your dog
  • B A cockpit room modelled on an aeroplane’s flight deck
  • C A beach room facing the sand

The answer comes near the end of this article.

A town that overtook its forecast: Tachikawa’s population ahead

Here I want to move from the company to the town itself.

The basic concept of Tachikawa’s 5th Long-term Comprehensive Plan, drawn up in 2025, projects the future population from the figure on 1 January 2023. According to it, the total population was expected to peak at 186,390 in 2028 and fall to 184,495 by 1 January 2035, the plan’s target year.

Yet according to the city’s “Households and Population” data, Tachikawa’s population on 1 January 2026 was 187,440. It had overtaken the projected peak two years early, by more than 1,000 people. The number of households was 98,970, within reach of 100,000.

Set side by side, it looks like this:

  • Back then (1977): in the year the Tachikawa base was returned, the population was 138,661.
  • Now (2026): 187,440, the highest in the city’s records.
  • Ahead (projection): a peak in 2028, then 184,495 in 2035. Except that reality has already overtaken the projection.

To say the projection was wrong sounds harsh. A projection is a line extended into the future from the numbers of the moment. After the line was drawn, the town spilled over it. My reading is simply that more people live in Tachikawa, and move to it, than was thought.

Of course, in the long run Tachikawa cannot escape population decline and ageing either. The same basic concept forecasts that, while today each older person is supported by about 2.6 people of working age, in 2065 it will be about 1.4. Perhaps the town is running on the flat stretch just before a hill.

Numbers showing Tachikawa’s strength are also lined up in the city’s documents. The average daily number of passengers boarding at Tachikawa Station is the highest of any Chuo Line station in Tama’s 26 cities, and third on the whole Chuo Line, after Shinjuku and Tokyo stations. The daytime-to-night-time population ratio, which shows how far the daytime population exceeds the night-time one, is 113.2, first among Tama’s 26 cities; apart from Tachikawa, only Musashino exceeds 100. In Tokyo government statistics, Tachikawa’s daytime population based on the 2020 census was 207,832, more than 20,000 above the 183,581 who live there. It is a town where people not only live but gather.

People from abroad who come to live here are increasing too. According to the basic concept, foreign residents made up 3.26% of Tachikawa’s population in 2025, the third-highest share among Tama’s 26 cities. By nationality, the largest groups are, in order, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino and Nepalese. The city’s new plan says that, as foreign residents and travellers increase, it needs to build a society that accepts each other’s cultural differences.

The future vision of Tachikawa set out in the basic concept is: “Tachikawa: a town in full bloom with charm, where people gather and flourish”. Its subtitle: “Bringing in fresh winds, protecting fine traditions”. A new hotel, ballet, and a basketball team made by the town’s chambers of commerce. Fresh winds and fine traditions are both happening, right now, in the same corner north of the station.

For visitors from abroad: new nights at Tachikawa’s North Exit

For people visiting Tachikawa from overseas, the changes of this decade become tools they can use as they are.

As a dining destination, the group’s Auberge TOKITO was selected in October 2025 for the Michelin Key, which recognises outstanding places to stay around the world, and the company has announced it received it again in 2026, for the second year running. According to the company’s guide, the restaurant was opened around a chef who led a Japanese restaurant in Europe to its first two Michelin stars. An itinerary built around meeting “new Japanese cuisine” in Tachikawa becomes possible.

For places to stay, there is SORANO HOTEL overlooking the park, and from 2027 THE NEXTT HOTEL by the station. Both have names in roman letters, easy to find in map apps from abroad. The company’s official site has a Japanese/English switch (JP/EN). On the third floor of ecute Tachikawa, the shopping zone inside JR Tachikawa Station, there is a Tokyo Metropolitan Government tourist information centre, the only one outside the 23 wards.

What will probably surprise overseas visitors most is how this corner came to be. On the land of a former military airfield and aircraft factory stand a rooftop pool fed by hot spring water, an inn recognised by Michelin, a venue for the qualifiers of a world ballet competition, and the arena of a local basketball team. And much of it is still owned by the old aircraft company. As layers of history go, few towns are this rewarding to explain.

Tachikawa’s next decade: my reading

Finally, I want to pause for a moment and think.

One company owns a twenty-fifth of the city and is behind many of the facilities that form its face. That, I think, is both Tachikawa’s strength and a kind of wager. It allows a coherent town to be built over a long time; on the other hand, the town’s future depends heavily on one company’s judgement. When the company wrote, as the first point of its policy, that it was aware of the social responsibility arising from the history and size of its land, it was probably because it understands this well.

Not every plan goes as intended, either. In April 2026, Tachihi Holdings announced that it had ended, on the expiry of the contract period, its project to restore a pre-war training aircraft, the “Akatombo” (“Red Dragonfly”, the Type 95-1 trainer), which it had pursued as part of its 90th-anniversary activities. Keeping a production team going at the contractor had become difficult. A dream of giving physical form to Tachikawa’s history in the sky reached a pause here. Among announcements that were all about the future, this one sheet alone looked to the past.

Even so, the outline of the next ten years is visible. The wedding venue opens in autumn 2026, the hotel by the station in March 2027. Games in a new league continue at the arena, and young dancers from around the world come to GREEN SPRINGS. And the town’s population, having overtaken the city’s forecast, may keep running a little further.

The land of the company that built aeroplanes no longer flies aeroplanes. Instead, it brings people in, puts them up, makes them compete and makes them dance. The force that once pointed at the sky has turned into a force that gathers people on the ground.

Quiz answer

The answer is (A), a dog room where you can stay with your dog. THE NEXTT HOTEL’s announcement lists, among its main room types, dog rooms of 36 and 48 square metres alongside doubles, twins, suites, universal rooms and Japanese-style rooms. There is no cockpit room and no beach room. If it’s a beach you want, there is a real one in front of Tachihi Station.

Back to Tachikawa Station’s North Exit

Look up at the hotel site, cut across the GREEN SPRINGS plaza, ride the monorail to Tachihi and back, and you have walked the future of Tachikawa’s north side in a day. Before you know it, the soles of your feet are throbbing and heavy.

A one-minute walk from the North Exit of JR Tachikawa Station, on the third floor of the Etoile Building at 2-14-10 Akebonocho, Tachikawa, Tokyo, is On the Shore Tachikawa (オンザショア立川店). It is a hot yoga studio with heated lava-stone floors, and it also offers room-temperature yoga, Pilates, women-only kickboxercise, boxercise, HIIT and personal training, with more than 25 kinds of yoga lessons.

It is open every day from 8:00 to 23:30, so there is still time to drop in after a game at the arena or a show at the hall.

For first-timers there is a trial yoga lesson for ¥1,980 including tax, with two bath towels, one face towel and mat rental included. You can come empty-handed.

Pregnant guests cannot join lava-stone hot yoga, but room-temperature maternity yoga is available. Many of our yoga instructors speak English, and the studio’s owner, Naomi Fujita, often helps guests from the US bases in English herself. She holds Eiken Grade 1 and a perfect TOEIC score, once worked as a translator and overseas interpreter at Nomura Securities, and lived in Alaska for three years. If you don’t speak Japanese, just mention it when you book.

Half of the town’s next decade is still on the drawing board. Today’s body, though, is best unknotted today.
